of US 2nd Cavalry, Utah expedition, commanded Dept of the
Pacific, resigned April 1861.
War Service: August 1861 full General in command of
Confederate Dept No 2, had insufficient troops to hold a very
large area, concentrated his army at Corinth, Shiloh (mw).
Post War: At about 2:30 pm, while leading one of those charges against a U.S. camp near the "Peach Orchard", he was wounded, taking a bullet behind his right knee. The bullet clipped a part of his popliteal artery, and his boot filled up with blood. A few minutes later, Johnston died from blood loss before a doctor could be found.
