War Service: 1861 designed and built the armored
fortification on Morris Is., aide to Bee at First Manassas (w),
commanded a militia regiment at Charleston, Col. of 24th South
Carolina, Secessionville, Vicksburg campaign, Chickamauga
(w), January 1864 Brig. Gen., commanded Stevens' Bde/Walker's
Divn in Atlanta campaign, Peachtree Creek (mw).
Post War: At the Battle of Peachtree Creek during the Atlanta Campaign, on July 20, 1864, Stevens was shot in the head and mortally wounded while leading a frontal assault late in the evening.
