April 1864 Brig. Gen., commanded Dearing's Bde/W H F Lee's Divn
at Petersburg, near Appomattox (mw).
Post War: Dearing was mortally wounded when he was shot through the lungs, and he was taken prisoner. April 13 he was visited and paroled by his old West Point classmate, Brigadier General Ranald S. Mackenzie, then commanding in Lynchburg. Dearing died from his wounds on April 22 1865.
