Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1854, cavalry service in the West.

War Service: 1861 Capt. in artillery, Allegheny Summit (w), Col. of artillery, Seven Days, Trans Mississippi, Arkansas Post (s), July 1863 Brig. Gen., commanded Deshler's Bde/Cleburne's Divn at Chickamauga (k).

Post War:  On the second day of the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863, while inspecting his brigade before an attack, Deshler was killed instantly by a Union artillery shell when it exploded in front of him, tearing his heart from his body.
