War Service: 1860 Maj. in Provisional army of South Carolina,
Fort Sumter, Col. of 1st South Carolina, defense of Charleston, June
1862 dismissed for drunkenness, January 1863 appointed Col. of
5th South Carolina Cavalry, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Trevilian
Station, Petersburg, August 1864 Brig. Gen., commanded Dunovant's
Bde/Butler's Divn, Vaughan Road (near James River)
Post War: Dunovant was killed October 1, 1864 in the fighting at the west end of the Confederate lines at the Battle of Vaughan Road, part of the overall Battle of Peebles' Farm. He was shot down while leading a charge against the Union position.
