Pre-War Profession: West Point resigned December 1860.
War Service: 1861 2nd Lt. of artillery, Capt. on Hardee's
staff, Maj. in 14th Arkansas, Shiloh, Col. of 8th Arkansas, Perryville,
Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, November 1863 Brig. Gen., cavalry
command under Wheeler, Atlanta campaign, mortally wounded
during a raid on Sherman's communications.
Post War: In August and September 1864 Kelly's Brigade fought at Franklin, Tennessee, while leading a charge at a skirmish near Franklin on September 2, Kelly was shot in the chest by a Union sharpshooter. Kelly died the following day in his bed at the Harrison House.
