Pre-War Profession: Raised a company of which he was made
a captain in Mexican War,
War Service: He secretly collected a band of twenty-five men, and
leaving his home made his way to Green river and reported to the Confederate
officer in command there as ready for duty. He was soon commissioned as captain
of Kentucky volunteers and placed under the command of Gen. Simon B. Buckner
in September 1861 at Bowling Green. April 1862 Col. of 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, raided
in Tennessee and Kentucky, December 1862 Brig. Gen., raided into Indiana and Ohio
captured, but escaped, commanded Dept. of Southwestern Virginia
Post War: Morgan fled through the grape arbor toward a hotel until Pvt. Andrew Campbell caught up with his group of three and Despite Campbell's repeated demands that he halt, Morgan failed to comply and kept running. Pvt. Campbell shot Morgan through the back, foiling his getaway. The bullet traveled through his heart, and he died on the spot.
