Died: February 7 1865, Florence SC

Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1820, artillery service, resigned 1823, reappointed 1827, instructor at West Point, Mexican War, resigned April 1861.

War Service: June 1861 Brig. Gen., provost marshal of Richmond, commanded Andersonville prison in 1864, commissary general of all prisons east of the Mississippi.

Post War: Winder died on duty in Florence, South Carolina, of a heart attack in 1865.
