Pre-War Profession: Planter, sheriff, Mexican War, Capt. in Stafford Guards militia.

War Service: 1861 Capt. of Stafford Guards, Lt. Col. of 9th Louisiana, October 1861 Col., Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign, Seven Days, Sharpsburg (w), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, October 1863 Brig. Gen., commanded Stafford's Bde/Johnson's Divn at Mine Run, Wilderness (mw).

Post War: Stafford was mortally wounded on May 5, 1864, at the Battle of the Wilderness in northern Virginia. A Minin ball pierced his spinal cord. He was carried to the Confederate capital city of Richmond, where he died three days later in the Spottswood Hotel.
