Pre-War Profession: Lawyer, politician, US senator,
expelled from the Senate July 1861
War Service: 1861 aide to Beauregard at Fort Sumter, appointed
to Confederate congress, August 1861 Col. in 1st Texas, October 1861
Brig. Gen. in Provisional Army, resigned February 1862 to sit in the senate,
opposed President Davis' military policy, mostly responsible for R E Lee
being named General-in-chief in 1865.
Post War: Fled to Texas, then to England, returned to US.
