War Service: May 1861 Capt. in 4th Tennessee, Lt. Col., Shiloh, Murfreesboro, January 1863 Col., July 1863 Brig. Gen., commanded Strahl's ' Bde/Cheatham's Divn at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta campaign, commanded Strahl's Bde/Brown's Divn at Franklin (k).

Post War: On November 30, 1864, at the Battle of Franklin, Strahl was leading his men on foot, when he was shot in the neck; he was struck and killed by another two bullets to the head.
