War Service: 1861 2nd Lt. of artillery in Confederate Regular Army, served on Bragg's staff in Pensacola, adjutant of Cobb's Legion, Maj. in the Legion's cavalry, Lt. Col., served in Hampton's Brigade, Sharpsburg campaign (w), November 1862 Col., Brandy Station, Gettysburg campaign, assigned to Butler's Brigade, October 1863 Brig. Gen., Ashland (w), defence of Savannah, commanded a division under Hampton in Carolinas campaign.

Post War: Planter, US House of Representatives, consul-general at St. Petersburg, Russia, envoy to Guatemala and Honduras.
