Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1832, Mexican War, Seminole war, Utah expedition, April 1861 captured by Arkansas state forces at Fort Smith.

War Service: 1861 Adjutant general of North Carolina and Col. in Confederate army, July 1861 Brig. Gen., commanded Department of North Carolina, criticized for loss of Fort Hatteras and New Bern, relieved of command, September 1862 resigned commission, served as state adjutant general.
