War Service: June 1861 Col. of 5th Alabama, First Manassas,
October 1861 Brig. Gen., commanded Rodes' Bde/D H Hill's Divn in
Peninsula campaign, Seven Pines (w), Seven Days, South Mountain,
Sharpsburg, commanded division at Chancellorsville, May 1863 Maj.
Gen., commanded Rodes' Divn/II Corps at Gettysburg, Spotsylvania,
Third Winchester (mw).
Post War: On September 19, 1864, Sheridan attacked the Confederates at the Battle of Opequon, also known as the Third Battle of Winchester. Rodes and Gordon prepared to attack Sheridan's forces when Rodes was struck in the back of his head by a Union shell fragment. He died on the field outside Winchester.
