command of the Dept of East Tennessee, commanded a Corps at Chickamauga,
September 1864 Lt. Gen. in Trans-Mississippi as Kirby Smith's chief of staff.
Post War: Newspaper editor, governor of Kentucky,
Vice-presidential nominee 1896.
