Gen., commanded Toon's Bde/R D Johnston's Divn in Early's Washington raid, reverted to the rank of Colonel to command 20th North Carolina, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Petersburg, Fort Stedman (w), incapacitated.

Post War: Superintendent of public instruction.
