War Service: March 1861 Capt. of Hanover Dragoons, First Manassas, Lt. Col. of 4th Virginia Cavalry, Williamsburg (w), captured while recuperating, August 1862 Col., Second Manassas, Sharpsburg (w), Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, September 1863 Brig. Gen., defended Richmond from Kilpatrick's raid, commanded Wickham's Bde/Fitzhugh Lee's Divn in Overland campaign, Shenandoah Valley campaign, resigned November 1864 to sit in Congress, took part in Hampton Roads conference.
