War Service: 1861 Capt. of CSA Artillery, recruiting duty in
Baltimore, May 1861 Col. of 13th North Carolina, Peninsula campaign,
Seven Pines, June 1862 Brig. Gen., commanded Pender's Bde/Hill's
Light Division at Cedar Mountain, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg,
Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, May 1863 Maj. Gen., commanded
Pender's Divn/III Corps, Gettysburg (w).
Post War: Pender was wounded in the thigh by a shell fragment fired from Cemetery Hill, and was evacuated to Staunton, Virginia, where an artery in his leg ruptured on July 18. Surgeons amputated his leg in an attempt to save him, but he died a few hours later.
