Pre-War Profession: He received little formal education other than in local schools a few months out of each year and one year at a small private school at Harrellsville. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was teaching in a small local school.
War Service: 1861 Pvt. in 19th North Carolina (later 2nd
North Carolina Cavalry), served in North Carolina, 1st Lt., Fredericksburg,
Suffolk, Brandy Station, Capt., Maj., June 1864 Col., Petersburg
campaign, February 1865 Brig. Gen., commanded Roberts' Bde/W
H F Lee's Divn at Five Forks, Appomattox.
Post War: Politician, state auditor.
