War Service: 1861 Capt., Col. of 21st North Carolina, First Manassas, Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign, First Winchester (w), chief of staff to Cleburne at Murfreesboro, returned to his regiment before Gettysburg, August 1863 Brig. Gen. in Heth's division, Bristoe Station (w), Wilderness, Spotsylvania, wounded near Gaines' Mill, transferred to North Carolina, Fort Fisher, Bentonville.
