War Service: 1861 staff officer, First Bull Run, chief of staff in IV
Corps in Peninsula campaign, April 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers,
commanded 27th Bde/7th Divn/Army of the Ohio, commanded divisions in the
Army of Kentucky and Army of the Cumberland, commanded 1st Divn/XIV
Corps at Chickamauga, commanded 3rd Divn at Missionary Ridge, Atlanta
campaign, Jonesboro - Medal of Honor, March to the Sea, Carolinas campaign.
Post War: Army service as inspector general, retired US Army 1888.
