War Service: 1861 served in Washington defenses, March 1862 Col.
of 1st Minnesota, Peninsula campaign, Seven Days, Chantilly, South Mountain,
Antietam, September 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded
1st Bde/2nd Divn/II Corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, commanded the
Dist. of Dakota, fought Indians in Minnesota and the Dakotas.
Post War: Army service in the infantry, served on the
Indian frontier.
