commanded 3rd Divn/V Corps at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville,
commanded 2nd Divn/III Corps at Gettysburg, July 1863 promoted Maj. Gen.
of Volunteers, chief of staff to Meade, commanded II Corps after Hancock left
field service at Petersburg, Appomattox
