War Service: 1862 quartermaster to Gen. Thomas at Mill Springs, chief quartermaster in Army of the Ohio at Shiloh, May 1862 Col. of 10th Tennessee, adjutant general of Tennessee, August 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, served in the field and in administrative duties, campaigned in East Tennessee, November 1865 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers

Post War: Army service, commanded a military district in Mississippi and Arkansas, Modoc Indian war of 1873
