War Service: 1861 Col. of 2nd California Cavalry, resigned to become
Halleck's chief of cavalry, March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers,
Corinth campaign, commanded a division at Chickasaw Bluffs, commanded
10th Divn/XIII Corps at Arkansas Post and Vicksburg campaign, Red River
campaign, Pleasant Hill, May 1864 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, served
in Tennessee, Tupelo, Nashville, commanded XVI Corps in Mobile campaign.
Post War: Army service, resigned 1869, postmaster, city auditor
