Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1852, frontier duty, instructor at West Point.

War Service: April 1861 Col. of 1st Ohio, First Bull Run, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn at Shiloh, advance on Corinth, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded I Corps at Perryville, commanded XIV Corps at Stone's River, Tullahoma, commanded XX Corps at Chickamauga, did not command again until November 1864

Post War: Army service, commanded cavalry and infantry schools at Ft Leavenworth, retired 1895.
