the Potomac, acting inspector general during Peninsula campaign, chief of staff
in V Corps, inspector of artillery in Washington, assistant inspector general of
V Corps, June 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd
Bde/2nd Divn/II Corps at Gettysburg (w) - Medal of Honor, commanded 1st
Bde/2nd Divn/II Corps in Wilderness, Spotyslvania (w), chief of staff to
Meade at Petersburg.
Post War: Army service in the infantry, instructor at West Point,
discharged in 1870 at his own request, President of College of the
City of New York.
