War Service: April 1861 1st Lt. in 2nd US Artillery, defense of Fort Pickens Capt. in 11th US Infantry, First Bull Run, September 1861 Maj. in 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery, assistant to the chief of Artillery in Army of the Potomac, acting inspector general during Peninsula campaign, chief of staff in V Corps, inspector of artillery in Washington, assistant inspector general of V Corps, June 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/II Corps at Gettysburg (w) - Medal of Honor, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/II Corps in Wilderness, Spotyslvania (w), chief of staff to Meade at Petersburg.

Post War: Army service in the infantry, instructor at West Point, discharged in 1870 at his own request, President of College of the City of New York.
