Gen. of Volunteers, Big Bethel, Hatteras Inlet, New Orleans, military governor, removed December 1862, commanded Army of the James 1863, Bermuda Hundred, sent home to await orders, unsuccessful North Carolina expedition.

Post War: US congressman, governor, presidential candidate.
