War Service: April 1861 Brig. Gen. of Massachusetts militia, lifted the blockade of Washington, May 1861 appointed Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Big Bethel, Hatteras Inlet, New Orleans, military governor, removed December 1862, commanded Army of the James 1863, Bermuda Hundred, sent home to await orders, unsuccessful North Carolina expedition.

Post War: US congressman, governor, presidential candidate.
