Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1835, frontier duty, resigned
US Army 1839, chief engineer of a railroad, geologist, constructed a railroad in
Russia, lawyer, militia officer, Mexican war, remained in army.
War Service: May 1861 Major in 3rd US Cavalry, New Mexico invasion,
Valverde, June 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, Inspector General and
Chief of Cavalry for Pope in Bull Run campaign, preferred charges on Porter, duties
in Minnesota, commanded upper defenses of Washington, held minor commands
until the end of war.
Post War: Army service, cavalry duty, taught at Yale,
resigned US Army 1870, lawyer, firearms manufacturer.
