War Service: October 1861 recruited a company of 22nd Massachusetts - Capt., Washington defences, October 1862 Col. of 2nd Louisiana (a Black regiment), served in Dept of the Gulf, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/XIX Corps at Port Hudson, served on Butler's staff, July 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Divn/XVIII Corps at New Market, commanded 1st then 3rd Divn/XXV Corps at Petersburg, commanded a division at Fort Fisher, commanded 3rd Divn/X Corps in North Carolina

Post War: Railroad businessman
