War Service: May 1861 commissioned as Capt. in 3rd US Cavalry, Peninsula campaign, Antietam, recruited 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry - May 1863 Col., Washington defences, opposed Early's raid, commanded a Reserve Bde/1st Divn/Cavalry in Shenandoah Valley campaign, Third Winchester, Tom's Brook, Cedar Creek (mw), he was appointed Brig. General of Volunteers on the day of the battle.

Post War: He was mortally wounded during the Union counterattack at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864
