Gen. of Volunteers, commanded the Western Dept following Fremont, commanded Dept of the South, Secessionville, commanded Dept of West Virginia, resigned his command August 1864

Post War: Army service, presided over the commission that tried the conspirators in Lincoln's assassination, retired 1866
