Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1845, Mexican war, frontier duty.

War Service: 1861 Capt. in Washington defenses, January 1862 Col. of 7th Massachusetts, Peninsula campaign, Maryland campaign, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded3rd Bde/1st Divn/VI Corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, temporary division command at Rappahannock Station, commanded 1st Divn/VI Corps from the Wilderness to Petersburg, Shenandoah Valley campaign, Winchester (mw).

Post War: He was mortally wounded in the Shenandoah Valley during the Battle of Opequon in 1864, otherwise known as the Third Battle of Winchester, when he was struck by a shell fragment.
