Gen. of Volunteers, commanded a brigade in 3rd Divn/III Corps, Peninsula campaign, Seven Pines, Chantilly, commanded 1st Divn/III Corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, May 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Gettysburg, commanded 3rd Divn/II Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, commanded X Corps.

Post War: Succumbed to malaria in 1864
