War Service: May 1861 Capt. in 1st Kansas, Wilson's Creek, July 1862 Col. of 52nd Ohio, commanded a brigade at Perryville, Chickamauga, commanded 3rd Bde/2nd Divn/XIV Corps at Chattanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta campaign, Kennesaw Mountain (mw), July 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers.

Post War: He was mortally wounded by a rifle shot to his right lung at the assault on Kennesaw Mountain in 1864
