Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1836, engineer projects
including building the Cumberland Road, Fort Warren, Forts Kearny and Laramie
on the Oregon Trail, Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas and Fort Taylor on Key West
War Service: April 1861 Capt., granted a special pass from President
Jefferson Davis to return with his family to the North, First Bull Run, Maj., Lt. Col.,
March 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, directed McClellan's brigade of
engineer troops during Peninsula campaign, Fredericksburg, commanded District
of Key West and Tortugas in Department of the Gulf
Post War: He was commandant of the district of Key West and the Tortugas, where he died of yellow fever August 15, 1864.
