Cumberland, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Stone's River,
Tullahoma campaign, commanded 1st Divn/IV Corps in Atlanta campaign,
commanded IV Corps at Spring Hill, Franklin (w) - Medal of Honor.
Post War: Army service, frontier duty, commanded the
Yellowstone expedition, retired 1892, governor of a soldiers' home.
