War Service: 1861 Capt. in 1st US Cavalry, Wilson's Creek, September 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded a division at New Market, Island No 10, advance on Corinth, Iuka, Corinth, chief of cavalry in Army of the Cumberland, November 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Stone's River, Tullahoma campaign, commanded 1st Divn/IV Corps in Atlanta campaign, commanded IV Corps at Spring Hill, Franklin (w) - Medal of Honor.

Post War: Army service, frontier duty, commanded the Yellowstone expedition, retired 1892, governor of a soldiers' home.
