War Service: August 1861 Capt. in 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Col., New Madrid, Island No 10, siege and later battle of Corinth, served in Grierson's raid, raided in North Alabama and Tennessee (w), April 1864 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded a 5th Divn/Cavalry Corps in Hood's Franklin and Nashville campaign.
