War Service: 1861 2nd Lt. in 1st US Artillery, 1st Lt., First Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, Peninsula campaign, Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville (w), died following operation, May 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers

Post War: He was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville and his injured leg was amputated but the wound nevertheless became gravely infected. Kirby died of his injuries on May 28, 1863.
