Pre-War Profession: Physician, and surgeon in Sultan's forces
in Crimean War.
War Service: 1861 enlisted in 1st Massachusetts, Capt., First Bull Run,
Seven Pines (w), August 1862 Col. of 35th Massachusetts, South Mountain
(w), April 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, assisted in recruiting Negro
troops and commanded the "Wild African Brigade" until close of the war, picket
duty on Appomattox River, served in the forces which occupied Richmond.
Post War: Mine superintendent, traveled to South America
and died there.
