War Service: April 1861 Capt. of Engineers in 7th New York Militia, August 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 1st Bde/South Carolina Divn in Ft Pulaski campaign, military governor of Norfolk VA, supervised the draft in Ohio, resigned October 1863.

Post War: Engineer, New York City park commissioner, US congressman, writer on civil engineering matters
