War Service: September 1861 Col. of 34th Illinois (which he helped recruit),
Shiloh (w), opposed Bragg's invasion of Kentucky, November 1862 appointed Brig.
Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/2nd Divn/XIV Corps at Stone's River
Post War: He was severely wounded in the hip during the Battle of Stones River near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the MiniƩ ball lodging near his spine. He was transported to a field hospital and then eventually taken to the Tremont House in Chicago, where he died several months later.
