Gen. of Volunteers, defences of Washington, Dranesville, May 1862 promoted Maj. Gen.
of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Divn/Dist. of Jackson at Corinth, Hatchie (w), commanded
XIII Corps in Vicksburg campaign, served in the Dist. of the Gulf, commanded XVIII
Corps at Ft Harrison, commanded the Army of the James and Dept of North
Carolina after Butler left.
Post War: Army service commanding various departments, retired 1881.
