Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1837, served in Topographical
Engineers, Seminole war, Mexican war, survey duty, dismissed from the service
in 1856 for disobedience and bad conduct, teacher.
War Service: June 1861 Col. of 23rd Ohio, Carnifix Ferry, commanded a
brigade in the Dist of the Kanawha, commanded 1st Bde/Kanawha Divn/IX Corps
at Antietam, October 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Dist
of Kanawha, captured by guerillas, released after 6 months, commanded Dist of Florida
Post War: US consul in Canada, professor at Seton Hall
