Gen. of Volunteers, Fredericksburg, commanded 3rd Bde/3rd Divn/VI Corps at Chancellorsville, commanded 3rd Divn/VI Corps at Gettysburg, commanded 1st Bde/2nd Divn/VI Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, helped repel Jubal Early's raid on Washington, commanded 1st Divn/VI Corps in Shenandoah Valley, Petersburg.

Post War: Army service, commanded expedition against Modocs in California, retired 1897.
