War Service: April 1861 Col. of 17th Pennsylvania, April 1862 appointed
Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 3rd Bde/2nd Divn/II Corps in Peninsula
campaign, while at Catlett's Station he is said to have conducted an unauthorized
retreated when he believed there were Confederate forces nearby
Post War: November 2, 1862, Patterson was found dead in his tent of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Initially it was not clear whether his death was accidental or a suicide.
