War Service: June 1861 Col. 1st Iowa Cavalry, duty in middle and western Missouri, July 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded of post at Houston MO, assigned to Department of the Gulf, commanded 1st Bde/1st Divn/XIII Corps in Red River campaign, commanded US forces on the Rio Grande River, general duties with Department of the East.

Post War: Politician, US minister to Guatemala, newspaperman
