Pre-War Profession: Graduated West Point 1845, Mexican
War, artillery instructor at West Point, Utah Expedition.
War Service: May 1861 Col. of 15th US Infantry, May 1861
appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, served as chief of staff to Patterson
in the Shenandoah, commanded 1st Divn/III Corps in Peninsula campaign,
commanded V Corps in Seven Days, July 1862 promoted Maj. Gen. of
Volunteers, Second Bull Run, Antietam, court martialled for his
part in Second Bull Run, dismissed from the Army in January 1863. The court martial was politically inspired
by Stanton, to harm McClellan. Porter fought to clear his name, and
was exonerated in 1878.
Post War: Porter was involved in mining, construction, and commerce. He was appointed as the New York City Commissioner of Public Works, the New York City Police Commissioner, and the New York City Fire Commissioner.
