August 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, November 1862
promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded a division in the
Yazoo expedition, Chickasaw Bluffs, commanded 2nd Divn/XV
Corps in Vicksburg campaign, commanded XV Corps at Chattanooga,
commanded XVII Corps in Atlanta campaign, March to the Sea,
Carolinas campaign.
