War Service: 1861 aide to McClellan in western Virginia, May 1861 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded 2nd Bde/Stone's Divn at Edwards Ferry (w), defended Hancock MD, asked to be relieved because of his health

Post War: Lander died from complications of pneumonia at Camp Chase, Paw Paw, Virginia (later West Virginia) on March 2, 1862
